Kinship care: “It’s better for the children and it’s better for the community” - AdoptUSKids for professionals

The year is 2001. A new caseworker named Greta Archbold has been assigned to a specialized unit focusing on kinship care in New York City. On her caseload are a brother and sister in middle school.

After a year in foster care, she learns that the kids have an aunt who is willing and able to take custody of them. The aunt lives in Maryland and the kids are in New York, so an ICPC is required. She checks in with the kids and they want to live with their aunt. After the agency completes a safety...

What does it mean for workers to be well? - CWEL

30% of child welfare professionals today—those working in foster care agencies, group homes, child protective services, and more—will not be working in this system next year, according to Casey Family Programs.

“As a program manager, that was one of the most frustrating realities of leading a team responsible for such important work: When we finally got new people hired and trained up, three or four months in, they decided to work in another industry. That impacts the morale of the entire or...

How foster parents can support reunification – AdoptUSKids blog

If you’re a foster parent, you know that there is one unifying goal for every child in foster care: permanency. The best way to achieve that is typically through reunification. In fact, the majority of children and youth in foster care will be reunified with their families.

GET READY! Tolling of the SR 99 tunnel starts November 9. - SDOT Blog

Tolls will result in changing downtown Seattle traffic patterns yet again.  When tolling first begins, we expect a percentage of drivers will experiment with different ways to get downtown. This means they might choose to use I-5, Alaskan Way, or local streets.

We also expect many of those drivers will gradually return to the tunnel, as the tunnel remains the fastest way to get through downtown Seattle. Tunnel tolls vary with the time-of-day and range from $1 to $2.25 with a Good To Go! pass...

Out of the classrooms and into Red Square

University of Washington students gathered in Red Square on Nov. 29 to protest the Trump administration’s proposed graduate school tax. Signs with the words “Universities Run on Coffee and Grad Students” and “If I can’t even afford Top Ramen, I’ll eat the rich” were held high in the air. The walkout, hosted by UAW Local 4121 and UW Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS), was a space for students to express their anger towards the tax proposal. According to the New York Times, what is at...

The rising crisis of homelessness: Responding through community engagement

Seattle has now reached the 2-year anniversary of its state-of-emergency declaration on homelessness. To address this, the U-District Conversation on Homeless (UCDH) held an event Nov. 1 at University Congregational United Church of Christ, where community members gathered to discuss the housing, outreach, and mass-entry shelter, or HOMES, tax proposal.

The event opened with introductions where audience members and conveners shared the groups they were associated with. Most people in attendance...
